Special Scholarships

Donations made in honour of the industry leaders listed below were invested for the long term and help support In Memoriam Scholarships for first-year students. The value of each scholarship is $1,500.

Students from British Columbia and Ontario who have been awarded a Canadian Printing Industries Scholarship may be eligible to have their scholarship named for one of these visionary individuals.

To apply for a Canadian Printing Industries Scholarship, go to Schools, select your school and select ‘Apply for a Scholarship’.

Honourary Scholarships

Jeff Ekstein (Ontario)

Willow Printing Group

A creative thinker, Jeff Chaired the ‘Canadian Print Industry Scholarship Trust Fund’ for 6 years through to 2022. Jeff’s ‘coast to coast’ vision reinvigorated CPISTF’s national network engaging new schools + attracting new industry partners + rewarding many new scholarship students. Jeff drove creation of a new ‘Canadian Print Scholarships’ brand while transitioning the Fund’s resources towards increased scholarship awards and a growing funding base.

Jeff is a tireless, long-serving print industry volunteer. Recognized in 2016 as the ‘Community Leader of the Year’, Jeff’s unselfish commitment for giving back to our industry and to our youth has been a mobilizing force for all sectors of the print + graphics industry.

In Memoriam Scholarships

John Kouwenhoven (British Columbia)

Hemlock Printers

John was a founding partner of Hemlock Printers and a strong advocate for regional training in the print industry. He served at length on the BCPIA board and was known for his commitment to helping individuals achieve their personal best.

Peter Purcell (British Columbia)

Unisource Canada

Peter established Inter-City Papers in Vancouver in 1984 and had a career in print that spanned 40 years, including an extended role as a Market Development Specialist. He is recognized as a dedicated leader, committed family man, inveterate golfer and the ultimate salesman.

Dick Blockberger (British Columbia)

Broadway Printers

Dick was the third-generation President & CEO of Broadway Printers, a Director of the BCPIA and Canadian Graphic Arts Association, and Director & Chairman of the CPIA. He is recognized for his dedication to the industry with several awards.

Jack Hazeldine (British Columbia)

Hazeldine Press

Jack was the President of Hazeldine Press and at various times held the position of President of the BCPIA and Chairman of the BCPIA. He was committed to industry training and education, serving for many years on the CPIA Scholarship Trust Fund Committee and was a key contributor to developing the BCIT Graphic Communications Technology Program. In 2003, he became the first Honourary Life Member of the BCPIA.

Bruce Brydon (British Columbia)

Coast Paper

Bruce served as President & Chairman of the Board of Coast Paper and was known for his genuine engagement with staff, customers and suppliers. He was a NPTA Stanley O. Styles Award winner in 1999, recognizing his industry leadership, innovation, dedication and character.

Garry Baines (British Columbia)

British Columbia Printing Industries Association

Garry was the Executive Director of the BCPIA from 1989 to 1995 and was the inspiration for the establishment of the organization’s student scholarships. His legacy of a sustained commitment to ongoing education initiatives has been an inspiration to many.

Don Gain (Ontario)

Harmony Printing

As a passionate supporter of the printing industry in Canada, Don served in many volunteer positions including nearly 15 years of service to Canadian Print Scholarships. He became involved in 2002 as a Trustee and within 3 years accepted the role of Chair of the Board.

Under his guidance, the organization thrived, and hundreds of students continued to receive Canadian Printing Industries Scholarships during a period of difficulty for the industry and its associations.
